During the California gold rush, increase population depleted the Tahoe Basin's natural resources to a dangerous lake low level. Between 1860 and 1890 umber was needed for fuel and to support the web of mines constructed beneath Virginia City. The decline of the Comstock Lode was likely the saving grace for Tahoe's forests.
During the 1900s the area became a retreat for the rich. Roads were paved in 1920-30. In the 1950s they started plowing roads in winter and soon this became a year-around destination and eventually residences.

This great body of water was created when an evil spirit was in pursuit of an innocent Native American. Attempting to aid the pursued, the Great Spirit gave him a branch of leaves with the assurance that each leaf that dropped would produce a body of water that the evil spirit would have to cross. But during the chase the whole branch was dropped in fright, creating this great lake.
