Lake Tahoe

Picture
Lake in the Sky

Lake Tahoe holds enough water to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14". And this water is is incredibly pure at 97%, nearly the same as distilled water.

Namesd "Big Water" by the Washoe Indians, it is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. It's depth is 989 feet on average with the deepest point at 1,645'. It is the third deepest lake in North America. The first 12' below the surface is 68 degrees in summer while depths below 700' remain a constant 39 degrees fahrenheit. It never freezes over due to the constant flow of water from bottom to surface.

The lake is surrounded by Eldorado, Humbolt-Toiyabe and Tahoe National Forests. One-third of the lake is in Nevada and the other two-thirds is in California. On the north side is Incline Village, second largest community on the lake. South Lake Tahoe is the largest. The east end of the city, on the California-Nevada state line is right next to the town of Stateline, Nevada, which is mainly geared towards tourism with t-shirt shops restaurants hotels, and Heavenly Mountain Resort with the Nevada casinos just on the Nevada side of the state line. The western end of town is mainly residential.

The area is also sprinkled with about a dozen or more ski resorts that bring visitors in winter. Summer brings in visitors interested in boating and lakeside relaxing.
